MLS opener
By the numbers
1:
It took Danny Califf, the former Galaxy and U.S. national team defender from Orange, one minute to earn the first yellow card in the history of the expansion Philadelphia Union — and the first of the MLS season — for a foul on Seattle Sounders forward Fredy Montero.
12:
The season’s first goal was scored by Seattle midfielder Brad Evans a dozen minutes into the Sounders’ 2-0 opening-game victory. Coincidentally, Evans also scored in the 12th minute of last season’s opening-game win over the New York Red Bulls.
40:
Going Califf one better, Philadelphia teammate Toni Stahl picked up the first red card in Union history (also the first of the season) for first-half fouls on Sounders stars Freddie Ljungberg and Montero.
90:
Veteran goalkeeper Kasey Keller, 40, recorded the first shutout of the season, keeping the Union off the scoreboard for the full 90 minutes.
36,241:
The attendance at Qwest Field in Seattle for the first MLS game of the season set a Sounders club record.
