Shopping: Paul & Joe set to open L.A. store

Share

Paul & Joe is bringing its youthful City of Light style to the city of headlights — Los Angeles.

Sophie Albou, the Paris-based founder and designer of Paul & Joe, picked the City of Angels to launch the brand’s first North American flagship store, which is scheduled to open Sunday on Robertson Boulevard. The company has 45 branded stores worldwide, mainly in Europe with far-flung outposts in Dubai and Taipei.

Americans might have heard of Paul & Joe through its collaboration with Target for a Go International collection in 2006. Last year, Albou also collaborated with Urban Outfitters for the Rendez-vous by Paul & Joe collection.

“When you grow up under the gloomy and rainy Parisian weather, you can only dream of the California sunshine,” Albou said in an e-mail from Paris.

“When we decided to develop our activities in the U.S., we based our headquarters in Los Angeles.” (Albou’s brother Julien Haggiag, who oversees retail accounts, lives here.) “As the idea of opening a store matured, it was only natural for us to select Robertson Boulevard . . . the most international, fashionable, and enticing neighborhood of L.A.”

Paul & Joe moves into the former Lisa Kline space, spreading its trademark Parisian style over the 1,500-square-floor space, with trompe l’oeil wallpaper and cutesy animal imagery.

The brand, which originally launched as a men’s collection 15 years ago, still puts out casual looks for guys such as trenches, khakis and suits for $600.

For women, Paul & Joe starts from $150 for a T-shirt to $820 for a perforated leather jumper from this season. Paul & Joe Sister is a lower-priced line for gamines, starting at $60 for graphic T-shirts, blouses and skirts; the line also has a full accessory collection including shoes, bags, belts and jewelry.
