Letters: Disneyland versus Disney World

Disneyland versus Disney World

I was really annoyed by Christopher Reynolds’ article on Disneyland [“Anaheim Made Easy,” Nov. 14] until I read the article about Disney World by Mary McNamara [“An Overload in Orlando,” Nov. 14].

If Reynolds is going to spend several hundred dollars on admission, it would behoove him to do a little research. If he had spent just 10 minutes on any of the blogs or Disney sites, he would have known about such things as Fastpass and meal reservations. And I don’t understand paying the exorbitant prices for admission to Disneyland if he’s only going to do about a third of the rides.

The article by McNamara, however, made me mad. She made the typical rookie mistake: trying to see everything. You can’t.

My biggest problem is that she talks out of both sides of her mouth: She wants to complain about not doing the proper planning; puts down those who do (“If I had that kind of strategic mind, I would have gone to West Point”); then gripes about being inconvenienced by crowds.

Don’t whine about doing what you need to do to avoid the lines and … at the same time bemoan the fact that your family is on a schedule. And yet, she doesn’t want to go at her own pace. Disney World will still be there in two years or five years or 10 years. You cannot do it all in one trip, so just do what you can and enjoy it.

Well written story by Reynolds. Engaging, lighthearted, fun and relatable. Welcome to the happiest place on Earth, Grace!

I chuckled at McNamara’s article. We flew from Los Angeles to Orlando and had a spreadsheet of which day to go to which parks and what hours to go on which rides. When we got to Walt Disney World, we ran around for a few days (in the August heat), and then, on the third day, our three children rebelled and said all they wanted to do was to go swimming. We argued and threatened them, but they won.

I have been contemplating a trip for my granddaughter’s birthday next year. I’m crossing Disney World off the list and instead will head to the United Kingdom. Catching that many buses just to stand in line is not my idea of a vacation. I’m an L.A. girl and love my Disneyland.

A bike ride with no disrespect

I take exception to Brad Forsythe’s letter [Nov. 14] regarding the downhill bikers of Haleakala. Years ago I sent my young teenage son with a group. I saw it as a unique way for him to appreciate the spectacular scenery, with no disrespect. Disneyland? Come on now. I’m sure the additional tax dollars from the hefty fee didn’t hurt Maui either.
