Eastern Sierra: Free guide points to fall color hot spots
Never mind the wild weather that has whipsawed Southern California over the last week or two. Trees in California’s Eastern Sierra know what time of year it is. The first sprinklings of yellow are starting to show, according to the Mono County Tourism and Film Commission, which is tracking the spread of fall colors on its website and Facebook page.
The agency distributes the useful “Eastern High Sierra Fall Color Guide,” which is free (you can download it here or call [800] 845-7922 to get a copy) and points you to the best places to see stellar golds and reds as aspens and cottonwoods put on a show.
The next few weeks could be the optimal time to take a spin up U.S. Highway 395 to visit places around Bishop, Rock Creek Canyon, Crowley Lake, Mammoth Lakes, June Lake and points north. The most recent fall color report includes:
— South Lake near Bishop, “75% to 100% yellows and oranges.”
— Tioga Pass/California Highway 120 (the eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park), “light green to yellow; above 8,500 feet, there are some brilliant oranges starting to show.”
