Season record: Teams played to a 1-1 tie in May

Update: Saturday’s match will mark the final MLS appearances for World Cup veterans Jonathan Bornstein of Chivas and Brian McBride of the Fire, with Bornstein headed to Tigres UANL of the Mexican first division and McBride retiring after an unparalleled 17-year career. And while both players will be able to walk away with their heads held high, as for their teams? Well, not so much. Chivas has lost five of its last six and needs both a win and a Houston loss against Seattle on Saturday to escape the division cellar. Chicago, which like Chivas entered the season’s final weekend with eight wins, tied for second-fewest in the MLS, will miss the postseason for the first time since 2004 and just the second time ever. The Fire has won twice in its last 12 matches and must earn at least a tie to avoid equaling the worst record in franchise history. Saturday’s match will also be the last for standout C.J. Brown, a member of the Fire since the team’s inception. He is joining McBride in retirement.
