GAMES OF THE WEEK
No. 17 Florida State (1-0)
at No. 10 Oklahoma (1-0)
Saturday, 12:30 p.m., Ch. 7
Hard to believe it has been 10 years since Oklahoma, led by the young Bob Stoops, won the national title with a 13-2 victory over Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Also hard to believe: Neither school has won a title since. Stoops and Oklahoma lost title games in 2003, 2004 and 2008. Florida State is playing its first season without Bobby Bowden as coach since the 1970s. The pick: Florida State.
No. 12 Miami (1-0)
at No. 2 Ohio State (1-0)
Saturday,12:30 p.m., ESPN
This marks the teams’ first meeting since the classic national title game of 2003 in the Fiesta Bowl, a double-overtime victory for Ohio State. Miami remembers a late pass-interference penalty and the end of a mini-dynasty. Miami hasn’t been the same since, although the Hurricanes are once again flirting with the top 10. The pick: Ohio State.
No. 18 Penn State (1-0)
at No. 1 Alabama (1-0)
Saturday, 4 p.m., ESPN
You can almost smell the sweat in this storied rivalry, In the 1979 Sugar Bowl, Alabama’s famous goal-line stand against Penn State helped secure a Crimson Tide national title. Three decades after Bear Bryant died, Joe Paterno takes his Nittany Lions into Tuscaloosa. Paterno was 0-4 against Bryant and, with Penn State starting a freshman at quarterback, this game probably won’t have a Happy Valley outcome. The pick: Alabama.
