Update: The Galaxy, which defeated one of the league’s strongest teams, the Columbus Crew, last week, takes on the weakest team in MLS. Once a league power, with four titles to its name, D.C. United has fallen on hard times. It has the fewest wins, the fewest points and the fewest goals scored of any MLS club. It has an interim coach in former U.S. international Ben Olsen, but there could be a white hat riding to the rescue before too long. When Toronto FC fired Preki as coach this week, it opened the door for D.C. United to make the former Chivas USA coach an offer. Preki, who took Chivas to the playoffs in all three of his seasons with the team, could be just what D.C. United needs. The Galaxy, meanwhile, is two or three victories from clinching a playoff berth. Edson Buddle still leads the league in goals with 14 and needs one more to become the first player in MLS history to score 40 or more goals for two teams. He netted 42 while with Columbus and has 39 for the Galaxy. Landon Donovan leads MLS in assists, also with 14, a single-season career high. The league’s all-time scoring leader, Jaime Moreno, did not travel to L.A. with D.C. United because of “flu-like symptoms.”
