Follow-up phone calls may help hospitals cut costs
House calls are back, but it’s not what you think. Hospitals that phone patients to discuss follow-up issues such as medications, diet, etc., after they are released might wind up saving money, according to a study highlighted in the Orlando Sentinel’s Vital Signs blog.
“The house call strategy is one way hospitals could reign in runaway medical costs in the near future, the authors note. Hospitals will have to cut down on
repeat hospitalizations in 2011 as part of the health care overhaul.”
