Shopping: Live on Sunset and Interscope Records to partner on Internet shows

Special to the Los Angeles Times

Live on Sunset, the sprawling fashion boutique that occupies the old Tower Records space on the Sunset Strip, is one of L.A.’s best-kept shopping secrets.

Stocked with dozens of premium denim and contemporary brands — and featuring spacious footwear, accessories, apothecary and lingerie departments — it feels like a freestanding department store, sans the hassle of hitting up a mall.

And soon the shop — which is outfitted with a large stage and high-tech DJ booth — will be partnering with Interscope Records on a series of shows that will stream live performances and celebrity appearances from the store to the Internet via the music label’s Vevo Network.

The boutique’s founder, Gerard Guez, may not be a household name, but as one of L.A.’s most prolific clothing manufacturers, he’s well connected. His downtown-based company, Sunrise Brands, churns out branded apparel and private-label collections, including the American Rag brand for Macy’s. Guez is also the licensee and manufacturer of U.K. brand Superdry, which opened its first West Coast store at the Beverly Center last week (more details on that store below).

The manufacturer originally leased the Live space in 2008 after entering into a deal with QVC to broadcast from the Sunset Strip. Due to staff changes at the shopping network, the deal never materialized. But it appears that the store’s potential as a live music venue will soon be realized.

“We are basically going to be creating a show for the Vevo network,” Guez said. “It’s about where fashion meets music and movies. They will provide all of the stars; they will come and promote their album or new song. We will be creating a magazine feel for a show.”

Music and celebrities aside, Live on Sunset will remain a bastion of fab fashion. Currently there are jeans and tops from high-end brands including Current Elliott, J Brand, AG, Resin and Nobody; club-ready frocks and separates from Twenty8Twelve, IRO, Coven, Surface to Air, Greylin and Alice + Olivia, to name a few; sporty menswear from labels including Superdry, Howe, Vicarious by Nature; chunky ankle boots, heels and ballet flats from Camilla Skovgaard, Joie, Sue London, Dolce Vita and Velvet Angels; edgy jewelry from under-the-radar brands including Alex and Ani, Baby King Studio and Ruby Kobo; and a wide array of swanky soaps, lotions and candles from Volupsa, Mistral and Seda France, among other brands.

“The whole idea was to create something very unique, where you can make fashion and music and movies in one place,” said Guez, adding, “Sometimes it takes L.A. awhile to catch on.”
