Palm Springs: Renaissance offers $139 rooms during film festival
Stars shine at this time of year in Palm Springs -- on screen and in person. The desert city’s 22nd annual film festival, which starts Thursday, is expected to draw more than 100,000 visitors, including many celebrities. The Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel offers rooms priced with film buffs (and red-carpet gawkers) in mind: $139 a night for the run of the festival.
The deal: The Renaissance opened in downtown last year in the former Wyndham Hotel, which underwent renovation. It’s connected to the Palm Springs Convention Center, ground zero for the glam Black Tie Awards Gala and red carpet on Saturday night (tickets cost $350 to $2,500 each, though the cheap seats are sold out).
Honorees this year include actors Colin Firth, Natalie Portman, Robert Duvall and Ben Affleck. The Renaissance could be a great spot to stay and watch the stars stroll by.
When: Good for stays Thursday through Jan. 17.
Tested: I called the hotel Tuesday afternoon and asked for the Palm Springs Film Festival rate. I found a room with one king or two queen beds available for Friday and Saturday night at $139 plus tax each night -- a $60-per-night savings off the regular rate for the same room on the same nights. To get this deal you have to phone the hotel (it’s not available online) and request the film festival rate.
The film festival: Tickets cost $11 for individual screening tickets and $15 for programs with panel discussions; passes and special events such as galas and wrap parties are priced separately.
