This week’s author events: Funny girls in L.A.

Can women be funny? That’s the question being posed by Zocalo Public Square this Wednesday at The Actors Gang Theater. Sure, Lena Dunham might have scored a big-money book deal, but female comedy writers are still in the minority in the entertainment business. This struggle to compete in a male-dominated industry will be explored with a panel discussion that includes Lisa Zeidner, author of the satirical novel “Love Bomb”; Jeanne Darst, author of the memoir “Fiction Ruined My Family”; and cultural critic Heather Havrilesky (“Disaster Preparedness”). They will be joined by Los Angeles Times columnist Meghan Daum as moderator.

Can’t wait until Wednesday? Author A.M. Homes takes a darkly comic look at 21st-century domestic life in her new novel “May We Be Forgiven”; she’s at the Hammer Museum on Tuesday night (and at Skylight on Wednesday, too).
