Dunkin’ Donuts to debut bacon donut breakfast sandwich

Dunkin’ Donuts is its maker. It’s drenched in sugar and salt. P.S.: There’s bacon.

Basically, the Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich debuting Friday hits the social media sweet spot.

A single photo of the item, which hits the chain’s national menu on June 7, has racked up more than 1,000 comments and more than 11,000 likes on Facebook.

The fiendish creation, which the company said performed well with customers in testing stages, features pepper-fried eggs and cherrywood-smoked bacon stashed between two halves of a glazed donut.

Dunkin’ Donuts calls the sandwich a “smorgasbord.” On Twitter and Facebook, commentators preferred to dub it “the ultimate hangover breakfast,” “the new heroin,” “heaven” and “basically, death.”

Whatever it is, the new product has 360 calories and 720 milligrams of sodium, which makes it less caloric than a McDonald’s Big Mac and slightly less salty than a KFC Honey BBQ sandwich.

And lest fans forget in their joy or disgust over the news, Dunkin’ Donuts also offers the so-called DDSMART menu, which features low-calorie options such as the 280-calorie Egg White Veggie Flatbread.

The Dunkin’ Donuts breakfast sandwich launch coincides with National Donut Day, during which the Canton, Mass., chain will offer customers a free donut with any beverage purchase.

California residents will have to sit this one out, however. Dunkin’ Donuts isn’t planning to open stores in the state until 2015.
