McKayla Maroney retires unimpressed face for 7Up endorsement deal

Olympian McKayla Maroney is about as well known for her endlessly memed unimpressed smirk as she is for her powerhouse performance on the vault.

So will she be recognizable wearing a smile in a new advertising campaign this month for Dr Pepper Snapple Group?

The 17-year-old gymnast is the new face for the company’s collection of 10-calorie sodas, known as Ten. The endorsement deal covers Ten beverages for brands such as 7Up, A&W, Sunkist, Canada Dry and RC.

The teen became an Internet darling this summer after winning the silver medal in the Olympic women’s vault competition. A photo of her with her arms folded, a glowering and twisted grimace on her face, began making the rounds with the tagline “McKayla is not impressed.”

In November, she mugged for the cameras with President Obama making the same pose.

The Ten line of sodas is landing at an opportune time. The soft drink industry is increasingly conscious of calorie counts, with Coca-Cola addressing obesity in a television ad campaign, PepsiCo posting health information on vending machines and government officials mulling a New York-style ban on large sugary beverages.
