$295 Serendipity 3 burger named world’s most expensive

Share

At $295, the new Le Burger Extravagant at New York’s Serendipity 3 restaurant costs more than a pair of Tory Burch ballet flats, 10 Facebook shares, a trio of Disneyland tickets or 70 gallons of gas in California.

The recently unveiled burger is the world’s most expensive, according to Guinness World Records. The campagna roll exterior is spread with white truffle butter, dusted with gold and topped with a blini, crème fraîche and caviar.

Nestled between the bread: Japanese Wagyu beef infused with white truffle butter, James Montgomery cheddar cheese, black truffles and a fried quail egg.

Sounds good? Make sure you order it 48 hours in advance. Or settle for the restaurant’s less opulent burgers, which start at $12.50 and go up to $18.50 for a caviar burger with sour cream and cucumber slices.

Serendipity, which starred in the 2001 John Cusack flick “Serendipity,” also makes a $1,000 sundae and a record-breaking $69 hot dog with foie gras and heirloom ketchup. The eatery’s hometown? The same city that recently spawned a $90-million penthouse and a $1-million parking spot.

[For the record, 2:30 p.m. May 29: An earlier version of this post stated that the film “Serendipity” was released in 2011. It was released in 2001.]

Burgers have come a long way from their meat-and-bread beginnings.

“Modernist Cuisine” author Nathan Myhrvold freezes his burger patties in liquid nitrogen. Scientists are working on a $330,000 burger grown from a cow’s stem cells.

Luxury burgers are de rigueur on menus from Beverly Hills to Brooklyn. Diners at the notorious Las Vegas restaurant Heart Attack Grill have actually suffered heart attacks while eating the so-called Triple Bypass Burger — which has 1.5 pounds of beef and a dozen bacon slices.
