Money Minute: CEO’s fib puts Yahoo in hot seat [Video]
Yahoo just can’t seem to get its act together. And the company’s handling of its chief executive’s bogus resume is only making matters worse.
In case you’re just joining the party, the fracas centers on Chief Exec Scott Thompson, who was caught embellishing his resume with a computer-science degree he didn’t really have. Yahoo says it was an “inadvertent” mistake.
Maybe so. But now the company is trying to contain the damage by announcing that the director who led the search for Yahoo’s top dog won’t stand for reelection to the board.
Yahoo also said it created a three-director committee to look at how Thompson’s made-up degree got overlooked during the hiring process.
Seems to me they’ve got things backward here. The issue isn’t that Yahoo messed up during the vetting of its new boss. The issue is that the new boss got caught fibbing about his academic background.
I don’t know about your workplace, but that’d be a pretty serious matter everywhere I’ve ever drawn a paycheck.
The question it raises is an important one: If Thompson would lie to land a job, what else would he lie about once he’s got it?
