About 36 percent of San Diego County property owners have four days to pay property taxes or face a fine, said the office of Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister.

Payments are due Dec 10. Fines add a 10 percent penalty to what is owed. So, for example, if you were delinquent on a property tax payment of $1,000, then you would pay a $100 penalty.

There are two payments due each fiscal year. This payment was due Nov.1, but not delinquent until after Dec 10.

Property owners can check what they owe online at sdttc.com. Bills can be paid online, by phone at 855-829-3773, by mail (postmarked by Dec. 10) or in person at any of the five branch locations. If you use a credit card to pay your taxes you’ll be charged a 2.19 percent fee, but echeck is free.

Bills can be paid online up until 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 10, and up to 5 p.m. at one of the county offices.

The Treasurer-Tax Collector office sent out 998,298 tax bills in September, which are expected to generate $6.49 billion. The highest property taxpayer is San Diego Gas & Electric that owes $138 million.

Correction: There is no $10 fee applied to late payments. The fee is only for late payments in April.
