‘Duck Dynasty’ musical in Las Vegas to close early

A new musical based on the characters from the hit A&E reality show “Duck Dynasty” will close earlier than expected in Las Vegas following reports of weak ticket sales.
“Duck Commander Musical” is set to close May 17 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, after playing for about a month. The stage production, directed by Jeff Calhoun, had been expected to run through June.
The musical was produced in part by the Dodgers, the New York theatrical team behind “Jersey Boys” and “Matilda the Musical.” It features actors playing members of the Robertson family, the Louisiana clan noted for its hirsute men and its love for hunting.
In a statement released on Monday, organizers said that “much has been learned from this limited engagement.” They indicated that the musical may have a future life as a sit-down engagement in other cities, as well as a national tour.
“Duck Commander” features original songs and is adapted from the 2012 book “The Duck Commander Family: How Faith, Family, and Ducks Built a Dynasty” by Willie and Korie Robertson.
Phil Robertson, the family patriarch, has received criticism in the past two years for making comments perceived to be anti-gay.
The Rio in Las Vegas has served as home to a Penn & Teller magic show and the Chippendales show.
