Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle announces winners for 2012

The Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle named the winners of its annual awards on Monday for stage productions that opened last year. Sharing the honors for best production were the national tour of “The Book of Mormon” at the Pantages Theatre; “Cyrano” at the Fountain Theatre; “Justin Love” at the Celebration Theatre; and the national tour of “War Horse” at the Ahmanson Theatre.

The group gave its award for best revival production to “Waiting for Godot” at the Mark Taper Forum.

Taking home the prizes for lead performance were Troy Kotsur for “Cyrano,” Christine Lakin for “Silence! The Musical” and Alan Mandell for “Waiting for Godot.”

The award for solo performance went to John Hurt in “Krapp’s Last Tape” at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. The writing awards went to Stephen Sachs for adapting “Cyrano” and Danai Gurira for “The Convert” at the Kirk Douglas.

It was a big night for Center Theatre Group, which oversees the Ahmanson, Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas theaters. The company received 10 awards, plus a special award for excellence.

“Waiting for Godot” took home five awards. “Cyrano,” which was a co-production between the Fountain and Deaf West Theatre, picked up a total of four awards.

Founded in 1969, the L.A. Drama Critics Circle consists of 15 theater reviewers who write for various print and online publications. One of its members is David C. Nichols, who reviews theater productions for The Times.

The award for ensemble acting went to “In the Red and Brown Water,” at the Fountain; “The New Electric Ballroom,” a Rogue Machine production at Theatre/Theater; “The Savannah Disputation” at the Colony Theatre; and “Waiting for Godot.”

The directing award went to Michael Arabian for “Waiting for Godot,” Shirley Jo Finney for “In the Red and Brown Water” and Simon Levy for “Cyrano.”
