Tony Awards 2012: Christian Borle beats Andrew Garfield

Christian Borle won the Tony Award for featured actor in a play for “Peter and the Starcatcher,” beating out Andrew Garfield for his role in the recent revival of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman.”

“Starcatcher” is a quasi-prequel to “Peter Pan”and is based on the book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, and was adapted for the stage by Rick Elice. Borle, who also appears in the NBC series “Smash,” plays the role of Black Stache in the show.

“Starcatcher” was produced at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2009. The show is categorized by the Tony organizers as a play, even though it features musical sequences and was nominated for original score.

TONYS 2012: Red carpet | Winners & NomineesGarfield had been a favorite to win the award for featured actor in a play, and his presence brought considerable Hollywood star power to Sunday’s ceremony at the Beacon Theatre.

The other nominees were Michael Cumpsty in “End of the Rainbow,” Tom Edden in “One Man, Two Guvnors” and Jeremy Shamos in “Clybourne Park.”

Last year’s winner in the category was John Benjamin Hickey for “The Normal Heart.”
