‘End of Watch’ beats ‘House at the End of the Street’ for No. 1
In the weekend’s box-office face-off between two young Hollywood stars, Jake Gyllenhaal reigned victorious.
On Sunday, studio estimates indicated that the 31-year-old’s police drama “End of Watch” tied Jennifer Lawrence’s “House at the End of the Street” for the No. 1 weekend position with $13 million in ticket sales a piece. A day later, however, distributor Open Road Films said its “End of Watch” had actually grossed $13.2 million, while Lawrence’s horror film came in with a final total of $12.3 million.
Lawrence, the 22-year-old “Hunger Games” star, just barely beat out 82-year-old Clint Eastwood’s “Trouble with the Curve,” as the baseball drama ended up with a weekend tally of $12.2 million
“End of Watch,” which stars Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as two tight-knit Los Angeles Police Department officers patrolling South Central L.A., was the only debut to meet industry expectations at the box office. Heading into the weekend, pre-release audience polling suggested that “House” would easily be the top pick at the multiplex, opening with around $18 million.
The cop flick was also the best-liked by moviegoers this weekend, as those who saw it assigned it an average grade of A-. With positive word-of-mouth, the low-budget film seems poised for a healthy run in the coming weeks.
