Cesars are in love with ‘Amour’

Two Academy Award best-picture nominees scored big at the Césars on Friday night.
“Amour,” Michael Haneke’s French-language drama about an elderly woman who suffers a stroke, won best film at the French movie prizes. Ben Affleck’s “Argo” landed best foreign film. The news is a reversal of sorts from the Oscars, where “Amour” is nominated for foreign-language film in addition to best picture.
The Haneke drama won four other awards at the Césars, including director, original screenplay, actor and actress. The actress winner, Emanuelle Riva, is also in contention for an actress Oscar and Haneke is vying for original screenplay.
The Césars’ adapted screenplay honors went to Jacques Audiard for his romantic drama “Rust and Bone,” whose Matthias Schoenaerts also landed a prize for male newcomer.
Though there was a fair amount of crossover with the Oscars this year, the French-language Oscar submission, “Intouchables,” was not honored Friday night. It was eligible for the Césars last year, nabbing a best film nomination and a best actor win.
