AFI Fest 2013: New Auteurs and shorts programs announced

AFI Fest 2013 has chosen 10 movies for its New Auteurs showcase and 36 shorts for this year’s festival, which takes place Nov. 7-14 at the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Chinese 6 Theatres, the Egyptian Theatre and the Roosevelt Hotel.

Among the 10 films in the New Auteurs showcase are “The Fake,” an animated drama from South Korea; the German drama “Nothing Bad Can Happen”; the Mexican comedy “We Are Mari Pepa”; and the Argentinean comedy “The Owners.”

“I left Los Angeles 11 months ago and traveled to half a dozen film festivals to curate the New Auteurs section and find the the 10 finest films from first- and second-time filmmakers,” Lane Kneedler, associate director of programming, said in a statement.

“It is heartening to see new filmmakers take such bold and courageous steps so early in their careers, and it is thrilling to see the reactions of our audiences as they experience the works of this talented group of artists.”

AFI has selected 36 titles from around the world for its shorts program including selections featuring Brooke Shields (“Wild Horses”) and Elijah Wood (“This Must Be the Only Fantasy.”)

The Times’ film critic Betsy Sharkey, Variety’s Peter DeBruge, author and critic Karina Longworth and L.A. Weekly’s Amy Nicholson make up the New Auteurs jury, with producer Alejandro De Leon, filmmakers Kitao Sakurai and Jordan Vogt-Roberts and shorts programmer Heidi Zwicker heading up the shorts jury.
