2013 Met Gala: Beyonce, Kimye, SJP are a few of our fave things

Celebs and fashionistas playing dress-up? Sign us up. A-listers turned out in droves for the Costume Institute’s annual gala Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which took on a punk theme this year.

Stars get the greenlight to make daring sartorial selections at the annual event. Some guests lived up to expectations while others fizzled with their own interpretations.

Here are some of our favorite moments from the event.

Beyoncé is fierce. And we expect nothing less from Queen Bey, who served as the honorary chairwoman. Mrs. Carter showed in an ornate black and gold Givenchy gown that looked much easier to walk in than the black and gold-trimmed mermaid-cut Emilio Pucci gown that made headlines in 2011 when the diva had to be carried up the museum’s stairs.

Kim Kardashian’s floral baby bump is somehow upstaged by her glove-sleeves. The reality TV starlet, accompanied by baby daddy rapper Kanye West, hit the red carpet also in a bold Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci floral dress and matching gloves. Why does this look keep reminding us of “Garden State”?

Jennifer Lawrence pets Sarah Jessica Parker. Parker must have made Carrie Bradshaw proud by donning a feathered faux-hawk from milliner Philip Treacy that just tickled Lawrence to pieces. The “Silver Linings Playbook” starlet got a much closer look by caressing Parker’s head right before bursting into a fit of laughter. Fave.

Nicole Richie gets painted, makes Rihanna want to “throw up” (in a good way?). Richie and Anne Hathaway debuted dramatic hairstyles at the event. Richie went silver and even painted her mane while Hathaway dyed her pixie cut bleach blond. Check them out here. But Rihanna was obsessed with Richie’s look head-to-toe, posting a picture of her on Instagram captioned, “This bitch makes me throw up!! #bestdressed#2013metgala @nicolerichie.” So, barf is the new black?

Ashley Olsen is a marigold angel. The former “Full House”-star-turned-fashion-designer wore a vintage Christian Dior Haute Couture gown with Manolo Blahnik heels. We believe there are sleeves somewhere under all that fabric.

The eye makeup! It is punk after all, and “Mad Men’s” Jessica Paré and January Jones, “Once Upon a Time’s” Ginnifer Goodwin and Elle Fanning took kohl to a new level with uber-dramatic and uber-heavy eye shadow fit for future-set films. Fanning painted blue lids to match her tie-dye Rodarte gown.

Psy and Madonna hang out. Or so we believe. The two were photographed by Pablo Frisk for Vogue sharing a genial smile. But it’s not the first time the duo have hung out. The South Korean pop star joined the Material Girl onstage last November to perform his runaway hit “Gangnam Style” at a New York concert. Madonna wore a Givenchy ensemble reminiscent of her own punk-inspired days and Psy wore a lush red tuxedo jacket.

Nina Dobrev swoons over Katie Holmes. Or so her Instagram leads us to believe. Dobrev, who stars in the CW’s “The Vampire Diaries,” posted a picture of Holmes ascending the stairs at the gala that she simply captioned, “Miss Katie Holmes walking up the red carpet....” We imagine there was a long sigh that followed. As for Holmes, who wore an ulta-feminine (and not at all punk) white Calvin Klein Collection frock, told People, “It was very easy to say yeah, this is the dress.” She reportedly finished the look with $2.5-million Lorraine Schwartz earrings.

Tom Brady’s blue jacket makes us miss Gisele Bunchen. In a bizarre turn of events, the football player’s bright blue blazer stood out more than his wife, who wore a relatively simple one-shoulder, black cutout frock by Anthony Vaccarello. They say bright colors draw the eye in, but we adhere to the supermodel eye-drawing philosophy.

We hear there were “spiked” cupcakes. After dinner, guests were served trays of cupcakes decorated with punk icing. That means cigarettes, red anarchy symbols and rainbow spikes, according to Vogue. A different spike, perhaps.

Katy Perry rules all. “I’m Joan of Arc, the original punk,” the singer joked to People. She wore a jewel-encrusted Dolce & Gabbana gown with a crown. Hey, it’s called the Costume Institute. A little bit of dress-up is a requisite.
