Miley Cyrus’ VMAs date turns himself in to Oregon authorities

Jesse Helt, the homeless man who became famous after Miley Cyrus took him to the MTV Video Music Awards as her date Sunday, turned himself in to authorities in Oregon on an outstanding warrant Thursday night.
Helt turned himself in to the Polk County Jail in Dallas about 7 p.m., jail staff said.
Helt was booked and then released after he paid $2,500 toward his $25,000 bond, staff said.
Cyrus took Helt to the award show after meeting him at a homeless center in Hollywood, his mother, who lives in West Salem, Ore., told the Statesman Journal.
The warrant was for an unspecified probation violation.
Helt was arrested twice in 2011 for parole violations, the county sheriff’s office said.
Cyrus blasted news media for concentrating on Helt’s criminal past and not the issue of homelessness, which she hoped would get more attention by taking Helt to the show.
Helt was accompanied to the jail only by his lawyer, staff said.
Helt’s next court date is Sept. 16.
