New ‘Pete’s Dragon’ trailer showcases another boy raised in the wild

A new trailer for "Pete's Dragon" debuted on Tuesday.

Earlier this year, moviegoers flocked to “The Jungle Book,” propelling the story about a young boy raised by wolves to massive box office success. In just a few weeks, film fans will have the opportunity to see a remake of “Tarzan,” about a young boy raised by gorillas. And in August comes “Pete’s Dragon,” about a young boy raised by — big surprise here — a dragon.

A new trailer for the latter film — which stars newcomer Oakes Fegley, Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford — immediately raises the question of how a child could survive in the wilderness for six years.

With Elliott, of course — the titular dragon who took a liking to Pete but who proves terrifying to outsiders. Once Elliott’s existence is revealed, locals immediately start hunting him, forcing Pete to try to save his loyal guardian.

The 3-D Walt Disney Pictures film, which hits theaters Aug. 12, is a reboot of the studio's 1977 musical of the same name. The new adaptation does not feature any songs — and unlike the old dragon, the new Elliott is furry.

“He’s like a puppy dog,” Howard told The Times at Disney conference last year. “Just really sweet. I just want a pet dragon so badly.”
