ART

George Herms An influential California sculptor steeped in the spirit of Beat poetry, George Herms will fuse his found object-oriented art with the free-wheeling sound of the Bobby Bradford Mo’tet and other jazz heavyweights for “The Artist’s Life.” A category-defying autobiographical piece billed as a “free-jazz opera,” the evening’s mix of percussive exploration on Herms’ unique sculptures along with a live, improvised jazz score should further illuminate the artist’s vivid body of work. REDCAT at Walt Disney Concert Hall, 631 W. 2nd St., Los Angeles. 8:30 p.m. $20 ($25 for Sat.). (213) 237-2800.

MUSIC

Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey The Grammy Museum’s new exhibit “Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey,” based on a large-format photography book of the same name, explores the genre’s four-decade history in the United States and its effect on the world. Through interactive mixing and listening stations, video footage, rare photographs and original artifacts, visitors will get a taste of what made the first pioneering moments from such auteurs as Grandmaster Flash so appealing. Highlights include handwritten lyrics from Tupac Shakur, LL Cool J’s trademark Kangol hat, the Run-DMC leather jacket and pants worn during the “Walk This Way” performance with Aerosmith and a hip-hop sneaker gallery. Grammy Museum, 800 W. Olympic Blvd. Opens Saturday. Through May 4. 11:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Sat.-Sun. https://www.grammymuseum.org.

The Muffs Kim Shattuck has led the Muffs on the three-chord scuzzy punk odyssey since the early ‘90s. They’ve released scads of singles across labels as diverse as Warner Bros. and Sympathy for the Record Industry, and still squall with feedback-laden abandon and pop sugar. The Satellite, 1717 Silverlake Blvd., L.A. 8 p.m. $12. thesatellitela.com.
