TV This Week

The New York Giants, the New England Patriots, Madonna: The first one plays the second and the third headlines the halftime show at "Super Bowl XLVI" in Indianapolis. And in between? Commercials, commercials, commercials! (NBC, 3 p.m.)

Speaking of Madonna — or rather, another fashion-forward dance-pop diva of more recent vintage — the special "Chasing Gaga" charts the rags-to-meat-dress rise of one Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, better known as Lady Gaga. (TV Guide, 9 p.m.)

So what if Katherine McPhee, above, came in runner-up on the fifth season of "American Idol." The gal's a trouper, and she'll be belting 'em out Broadway style in the new musical drama "Smash." Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston also star. (NBC, 10 p.m.)

The popular host of an outdoor-adventure show (Bruce Greenwood) finds himself up a creek without a paddle … only it's not a creek, it's "The River" in this new mystery drama set in the Amazon. "24's" Leslie Hope also stars. (ABC, 9 p.m.)

Look who's talking: Late-night host Charlie Rose and "60 Minutes" correspondent Lara Logan attempt to fill the shoes of Edward R. Murrow in a revamped version of the broadcast legend's 1950s-era interview program "Person to Person." (CBS, 8 p.m.)

Used to be courtin' a gal meant a lot of small talk while sittin' in her parlor under the watchful eyes of her folks. Nowadays it's all done with computers, like in the special "Love at First Byte: The Secret of Online Dating." (CNBC, 6, 7, 9 and 10 p.m.)

"Valentine's Day Massacre" is what you'll get if you don't to buy candy for your sweetie on that special day. It's also a special reconstructing the infamous 1929 slayings ordered by Chicago mob boss Al Capone. (National Geographic, 10 p.m.)

An illegal alien of the extraterrestrial variety, below, who sounds a lot like Seth Rogen and goes by the name of "Paul," is befriended by two nerdy Brits (Simon Pegg, Nick Frost) in this 2011 sci-fi send-up. "SNL's" Kristen Wiig also stars. (Cinemax, 10 p.m.)
