Quick Takes: ‘Follies’ cast to follow it to L.A.

Share

The Broadway revival of “Follies” will retain much of its principal cast when it moves to Los Angeles this season. Actors Jan Maxwell, Danny Burstein, Ron Raines and Elaine Paige will appear in the musical when it opens at the Ahmanson Theatre on May 9.

Victoria Clark will take over the role currently played on Broadway by Bernadette Peters. Clark, whose Broadway credits include the current “Sister Act” and 2005’s “The Light in the Piazza,” will play the role of Sally Durant Plummer. A spokeswoman for Center Theatre Group said the five actors were the only ones the company could announce at this time.

“Follies” is set to begin previews at the Ahmanson on May 3 and will run for six weeks through June 9. “Follies” is a last-minute addition to the Ahmanson’s season following the abrupt cancellation in November of the “Funny Girl” revival. Center Theatre Group moved up its presentation of “Fela!” to fill the dates vacated by “Funny Girl.”

Vegas ‘Phantom’ sets closing date

Cue the organ one final time. “Phantom — The Vegas Spectacular,” the truncated version of the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber musical playing at the Venetian, has set a closing date of Sept. 2.

The Las Vegas production originally opened in 2006. The show runs a casino-friendly 95 minutes, versus the full-length Broadway version at the Majestic Theatre that runs 21/2 hours, with an intermission. (Both versions are staged by Hal Prince.) By the time it closes, the Vegas “Phantom” will have had 2,691 performances, producers said.

Chili Peppers delay U.S. tour

Frontman Anthony Kiedis’ foot injury has forced the Red Hot Chili Peppers to postpone the start of their upcoming U.S. tour, the band announced Wednesday.

The tour in support of their Grammy-nominated album “I’m With You” was originally scheduled to kick off Jan. 20 in Sunrise, Fla., but has been pushed back to March after Kiedis injured his foot. The Chili Pepper recently underwent surgery to remove a crushed sesamoid bone and correct a detached tendon in his foot. He is expected to make a full recovery.

All the dates have been pushed back, some as far as eight months, as the band had a lengthy European leg already scheduled for summer and fall. The band’s Feb. 26-27 dates at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, which were sold out, have been moved to Aug. 11-12.
