Tom Cruise receives Friars Club icon award with Suri as his date

Tom Cruise was given the Friars Clubs’ fourth Entertainment Icon Award on Tuesday in Manhattan, putting him in an elite group rounded out by Douglas Fairbanks, Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra.

And while wife Katie Holmes was off working in China, Cruise didn’t go stag. Rather, 6-year-old daughter Suri Cruise was his date, pretty in pink with coloring books in tow, Us Weekly said.

“Rock of Ages”costar Alec Baldwin presented the award at the R-rated event (Suri, cover your ears!) hosted by the private club’s charitable arm, the Friars Foundation. Fiancee Hilaria Thomas accompanied the”30 Rock” actor.

Though the event was a toast, not a roast, attendees were treated to a night of double-entendres as pals including onetime Cruise costars Kevin Pollak and Cuba Gooding Jr. told stories about the guest of honor.

Jerry Lewis was to have done the presenting honors instead of Baldwin but had to be rushed to the hospital before making it to the event, after becoming weak with low blood sugar. No worries, Lewis’ publicist said Wednesday, the 86-year-old comic is fine after a night of rest.

Lewis, who was to have received an honor as well, incidentally is about to get busy directing rehearsals for a musical remake of his 1963 film “The Nutty Professor.”

The Friars Club is a private organization started early in the 20th century by a group of agents, according to its website. Now boasting celebrities and comics among the membership, it’s famed for its celebrity roasts.
