David Beckham won’t be playing for British Olympic soccer team

Poor Becks. David Beckham has been left off the roster for the British Olympic soccer team.

The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder, whom we prefer to refer to as the hunka-hunka H&M underwear model, was pretty let down by the decision that he won’t be playing at the summer games in London.

“Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me, so I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad,” the 37-year-old Brit said in a statement to the Associated Press. “Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold.”

Beckham, who is married to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, took part in carrying the Olympic flame in May. He also helped London win the bid to host the games this year, according to Sports Now.

Beckham was short-listed for the 18-man squad, but was told by coach Stuart Pearce that he didn’t make it. The reason for that may be that the team can’t allow more than three spots for players older than 23. Ouch. Beckham lost the over-age spots to Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and English defender Micah Richards.

In light of the snub, Becks is still putting his best foot forward in support of the Games.

“As a Londoner, I will have been really proud to have played a small part in bringing the Olympics to my home town as part of [London Chairman Sebastian Coe’s] team, and I can’t wait for the Games to begin and enjoy every moment along with the rest of Great Britain,” he said.

But fear not, Angelenos. In January, Beckham extended his deal with the Galaxy for two more years, signing a reported $15-million contract.

Meaning, he and Posh won’t be going anywhere for the time being. Well, she might be heading to London’s West End to help launch the Spice Girls musical, but the couple will still be calling the U.S. home for now.

“I’ve seen first-hand how popular soccer is now in the States and I’m committed as ever to growing the game here,” Beckham said. “My family and I are incredibly happy and settled in America and we look forward to spending many more years here.”

The deal included a sabbatical that would have allowed him to leave the team to play for Britain during the Olympics.
