With ‘Harvest,’ Michael Shannon goes back to his roots

Michael Shannon is riding a bit of a hot streak. His portrayal of a manic survivalist in “Take Shelter” garnered all sorts of acclaim last year. He’s a standout in the otherwise somewhat muddled spiritual drama “Grace” on Broadway. He did pretty nicely with “The Iceman” earlier this year. And he’ll be reporting for Zod duty in “Man of Steel” this summer.”

The 38-year-old still has time for a passion project though. Shannon has signed on to “The Harvest,” a psychological thriller about parents who are forced into a complicated situation involving their ill child. Shannon will play opposite Samantha Morton in the film, which will be directed by John McNaughton (“Wild Things”). It’s the latest career twist for Shannon, who was a workaday actor for years -- more than two dozen credits to his name -- before his “Revolutionary Road” breakout in 2008.

According to a release, Shannon will star as a heart surgeon who, along with his wife (Morton), has created a cloistered world for their sick son (Charlie Tahan). But that world begins to come apart when a new neighbor moves in and forges a relationship with the son.

Elephant Eye Films, the company that worked on Shannon’s Cannes darling “Mud,” is behind the movie, which will be shooting through January in the New York area.
