Cinematic Valentines for romantics

The American Cinemathque, Cinefamily, UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Laemmle Theaters are celebrating Valentine’s Day Thursday with an evening of romantic programming.

The Cinematheque’s “Happy Valentine’s Day” festival carries on its annual tradition at the Egyptian of screening Blake Edward’s 1961 classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” starring Audrey Hepburn on Valentine’s Day. Over at the Aero, the 1942 Oscar-winning rmelodrama “Casablanca” with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman is on tap Thursday to get you in a lovey-dovey mood.

Also scheduled for the series is F.W. Murnau’s remarkable Oscar-winning 1927 silent masterpiece “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans,” starring Janet Gaynor, Friday at the Aero.

And what Valentine’s Day festival would be complete without Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) falling in and out of love in the 1939 Oscar-winning Civil War epic “Gone With the Wind,” scheduled for Saturday at the Aero. https://www.americancinematheque.com

UCLA Film & Television Archive serves up romance Thursday night at the Billy Wilder Theater with its “2 by Borzage” program. Jean Arthur and Charles Boyer star in Frank Borzage’s 1937 drama “History is Made at Night,” followed by his 1933 melodrama “Secrets,” with Mary Pickford in her final film, and Leslie Howard. https://www.cinema.ucla.edu

Laemmle presents a Valentine’s Day “Grease” sing-a-long Thursday evening at the NOHO 7 in North Hollywood and the Royal Theatre in West Los Angeles. https://www.laemmle.com/Grease

The Retro Format Films on 8mm program at the intimate Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian features the 95th anniversary presentation Saturday evening of “Tarzan of the Apes.” The very first adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ story stars Elmo Lincoln. Also screening is 1921’s “The Adventures of Tarzan,” a feature version of the serial that marked Lincoln’s last appearance as the ultimate swinger. https://www.americancinematheque.com

Film Independent at LACMA presents “Cassavetes’ Shadow 2013: Film Independent Screening Awards Nominee Discussion and Screening,” Thursday evening at the Leo S. Bing Theater. Besides a discussion with the 2013 Film Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award nominees, there will be a screening of the late filmmaker’s 1980 drama “Gloria,” starring his wife, Gena Rowlands.

LACMA’s series “The Naked City: New York Noir” continues Friday at the Bing with Otto Preminger’s 1950 noir “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” which marked the reuniting of his “Laura” stars-Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney. The second feature is 1952’s “The Thief,” starring Ray Milland.

Saturday’s offerings are Morris Engel, Ruth Orkin and Ray Ashley’s charming 1953 “Little Fugitive” and Ted Tetzlaff’s 1949 thriller “The Window,” for which Bobby Driscoll earned a juvenile Oscar. https://www.lacma.org

Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theatre is featuring Dennis Hopper’s rarely seen 1980 drama “Out of the Blue,” Friday through Feb. 21. Cinefamily is featuring a new 35mm print.

The Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre is presenting a free screening Tuesday evening of Ben Lewin’s “The Sessions,” starring John Hawkes and Oscar-nominee Helen Hunt.
