SAG Awards 2013: Tommy Lee Jones wins best supporting actor

Tommy Lee Jones won the SAG Award for male actor in a supporting role Sunday night for playing the outspoken Pennsylvania congressman Thaddeus Stevens in Steven Spielberg’s historical drama “Lincoln.”

Jones was not in attendance to receive the award, which presenter Nicole Kidman accepted on his behalf.

The award marks Jones’ second SAG win and first individual award, having shared the ensemble award for 2007’s “No Country for Old Men.” He earned lead actor nominations for that film and the 1995 TV movie “The Good Old Boys.” The award puts the 66-year-old actor at the front of the pack for the Oscar race for supporting actor.

He and his “Lincoln” costars are also nominated for the SAG Award for film cast.

Jones beat out four fellow veteran actors: Robert De Niro, who plays an obsessive Philadelphia Eagles fan in “Silver Linings Playbook”; Alan Arkin, a wily Hollywood producer in “Argo”; Philip Seymour Hoffman, a charismatic cult leader in “The Master”; and Javier Bardem, the cyberterrorist villain in “Skyfall.”

Jones will once again square off with De Niro, Arkin and Hoffman, as well as Christoph Waltz (“Django Unchained”), at this year’s Academy Awards. In each of the last five years, the SAG supporting actor winner has gone on to win the equivalent Oscar.
