With his “American Hustle” one of the few pieces of the year-end film puzzle yet to click into place, David O. Russell will receive a special tribute at the upcoming AFI Fest. The event will take place on Nov. 8 at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood.

Footage from “American Hustle” will show as part of the tribute. Russell’s “The Fighter” first screened publicly at AFI Fest in 2010 as one of its surprise screenings. “Hustle” could possibly be in line for the same unveiling.

Written by Russell and Eric Singer, “Hustle” uses as a jumping-off point the notorious ABSCAM sting operation in which federal agents, con men and politicians intermingled in a complicated scheme. The film stars Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Bradley Cooper.

Russell has been on an Oscar roll of late, with directing nominations for both “The Fighter” and last year’s “Silver Linings Playbook” as well as an adapted screenplay nom for “Silver Linings.” Bale and Melissa Leo also won Oscars for “The Fighter,” and Lawrence won best actress for “Silver Linings.”

AFI Fest runs from Nov. 7 to 14.
