Jenni Rivera memorial service Wednesday at the Gibson Amphitheatre

Mexican American singer-songwriter Jenni Rivera, who died along with six other people when their Lear jet 25 crashed near Iturbide, Mexico, on Dec. 9, will receive a public memorial Wednesday at the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk.

The memorial is being called a “Celestial Graduation,” and will take place between 10 a.m. and noon.

“We will celebrate the graduation, with honors, of our beloved mother, daughter and sister Jenni Rivera,” her family said in a statement.

Rivera, a Long Beach native, also was an actress and music producer.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Mexican aviation authorities are continuing to investigate the source of the crash. According to a report by our L.A. Times colleagues on the Metro desk, an executive at the company that owned the plane has had a history of legal troubles.
