Benjamin Gibbard premieres solo debut on YouTube

Right around this time last year we were bringing you word that “New Girl” star Zooey Deschanel and Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie had separated after 24 months of marriage. For the indie-inclined among us, the split was a setback. But we soldiered on.
Today we present happier news, at least for fans of Death Cab’s sad-sack guitar pop: From now until its release on Oct. 16, YouTube is streaming Gibbard’s solo debut, “Former Lives,” in its entirety. Listen below.
Recorded in Los Angeles at the Ship Studio in Eagle Rock, “Former Lives” finds Gibbard in a typically introspective mood, though he’s broadened his sonic palette a bit since Death Cab’s “Codes and Keys” in 2011. Aimee Mann provides guest vocals in “Bigger Than Love,” while another cut features mariachi-style horns. “Shepherd’s Bush Lullaby,” the album’s opener, is an a cappella workout.
Gibbard kicks off a North American tour in support of the album this weekend. He’s scheduled to play the Wilshire Ebell Theatre on Nov. 14.
