Coachella 2013: Longing for Daft Punk and band teases new album

Leave it to Daft Punk to bring excitement to Day One of Coachella – without even being present.

The rumors were flowing fast and furious that the highly regarded (and amazingly mysterious) EDM duo would play a secret gig at Coachella, and it was clear the Frenchmen were on the mind of festival-goers: There were dozens of fans roaming the grounds in Daft Punk shirts.

Those fans got a boost Friday when a teaser for the duo’s hugely anticipated album, “Random Access Memories,” played out on the jumbotrons at the Main Stage, right before the Yeah Yeah Yeahs rocked their set. The short clip also played for fans in the Mojave Tent.

Having already enticed fans with the first of a recurring series of video chats, the teaser brought some good old fashioned anticipation and confirmed that the album will be jampacked with collaborators. The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, Animal Collective’s Panda Bear, Paul Williams, Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Chilly Gonzales, DJ Falcon, Todd Edwards and Pharrell are slated to appear on the disc, which is out May 21.

Most importantly, the 1-minute, 42-second clip featured new music, by way of the ridiculously groovy, Pharrell-assisted “Get Lucky,” who appeared in the clip alongside the Parisans donning their famously chrome-plated helmets – and some fabulously glittering evening wear.

It’s not a live performance, but maybe fans will “get lucky” this year (at least if you believe the Coachella rumor mill). One fan thinks so, after raving about the pair’s iconic 2006 festival performance, she called the prospect of a secret gig “one of the worst-kept Coachella secrets.”
