Phife Dawg’s posthumous single ‘Nutshell’ to air on Beats 1

The death of Phife Dawg, a cornerstone of the pioneering ‘80s and ‘90s rap outfit A Tribe Called Quest, was an immeasurable loss for hip-hop. But new music from the late MC is still surfacing.
Phife Dawg was working on a new solo album, “Give Thanks,” when he died of diabetes complications last month. A new single from that album, “Nutshell,” will debut Tuesday on Apple Music’s Beats 1.

The track sports a beat from the late J. Dilla -- another pioneer of hip-hop who succumbed to medical issues. Half of all proceeds from the song will go to the American Diabetes Assn. and National Kidney Foundation.
A music video for the single will debut Tuesday at “The Celebration of Phife,” a memorial planned at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre.
There’s no word yet on a release date or plans for the rest of “Give Thanks,” but it’s a pleasure to still have new material from Phife in the wake of his loss.
