Weird Al Yankovic meets J.K. Simmons and ‘Whiplash’

Share

Who should any musician who wants to be at his or her best call to help prepare for an impending tour? Why, Oscar winner J.K. Simmons, of course.

Weird Al Yankovic has posted a video in which he appears to interact with Simmons in one of the pivotal scenes exemplifying why Simmons just won the Academy Award for supporting actor for his role as the unrelenting music teacher in “Whiplash.”

Yankovic explains that he wants to be “perfect” for his forthcoming Mandatory World Tour. He gets more than he bargained for, however, when he turns to Simmons for coaching. But rather than trying to play the drums, Yankovic trots out his trusty accordion in hopes of getting some pointers on “The Beer Barrel Polka.”

The veteran musical parodist has been extra busy with his latest album, “Mandatory Fun,” for which he posted a string of new videos released daily leading up to its release last July. They helped it enter the Billboard 200 Albums chart at No. 1, the first chart-topping album of Yankovic’s three decade-plus recording career.

Don’t miss the Mars bar reference, or Yankovic’s response when Simmons’ character asks, “Do you know why I just threw a chair at your head?”

Yankovic starts a run of five shows at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on May 12, the beginning of an 87-date North American tour before he heads to Europe in the fall. No Southern California dates have been announced.
