FX released the first trailer for upcoming eight-episode drama series “Taboo” on Thursday, even as production continues on the production in London.

Starring Academy Award nominee Tom Hardy (“The Revenant,” “Mad Max: Fury Road”) the series, set in 1814, centers around James Keziah Delaney, a man long believed dead, who’s traveled the Earth before returning home to claim his father’s shipping empire. The series also stars Oona Chaplin (“Game of Thrones”), Michael Kelly (“House of Cards”) and Jonathan Pryce (“Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl”).

Hardy also serves as an executive producer on the project, alongside Ridley Scott (“The Martian,” “Aliens”) and Steven Knight (“Eastern Promises”), with whom Hardy has worked on “Locke” and “Peaky Blinders.”

The trailer is gritty and dark, with a visual style that calls to mind the exquisite cinematography of Steven Soderbergh’s Cinemax series “The Knick.” “Taboo” promises to be a landmark production for FX, with production values that audiences typically only find on premium cable.
