New York Fashion Week: Rosie Assoulin, one to watch

Share

Rosie Assoulin is definitely one to watch. The New York talent started in the fashion business working under veteran jeweler (and future mother-in-law) Roxie Assoulin, at Lee Angel. Then, after a stint at the Fashion Institute of Technology, she gained experience in the design studios of Oscar de a Renta in New York and Lanvin in Paris.

She launched her own collection for Resort 2014, and showed again for fall. Last month, she gained international attention by dressing Michelle Dockery for the Emmys in a color-block gown that was one of the evening’s best simple chic looks.

For her spring collection, Assoulin is continuing to refine her aesthetic, which straddles the line between daytime and evening wear, fantastical and practical.

‎The inspiration: Artists Jim Lambie and Georgia O’Keeffe are two names Assoulin name-checked when asked about her boldly-colored, sculptural-meets-sporty pieces. She was also inspired by, of all things, straw vacation hats, which translated into a super fun tiered straw skirt, worn with a sleeveless white top, as well as the unusual straw bags that accessorized the collection.

The look: Whimsical resort.

Key pieces: White poplin shirt dress with vents at the shoulder and a tie waist. Navy, green and white top with sculptural ‎side ruffle worn with white trousers. Pink caplet blouse with striped border worn over white pencil skirt. Red off the shoulder, flutter sleeve dress. Emerald green textured sundress.

The verdict: ‎Modern with a dramatic, almost cinematic flair. I can’t wait to see what she does next.
