N.Y. Fashion Week: Peter Som’s stylish boy-girl mashup
Designer Peter Som has been in the spotlight because of his upcoming cheap chic collaboration with Kohl’s, which lands in stores in the spring. But it was his main fall 2014 line that he showed Friday morning at New York Fashion Week.
The inspiration: A 1960s London and 1970s Paris mashup, he said backstage, with shades of blue, camel and pops of orange, blurred floral and mashup menswear prints. Think Jane Birkin on Carnaby Street.
The look: Pretty girl trying to look tough.
Key pieces: Navy pea coat worn with leopard print goat fur miniskirt, herringbone print goat fur coat, mashup menswear print jacquard belted jacket and wide legged pants, lilac blurred floral gown, sexy black wool halter tuxedo jumpsuit.
The verdict: Som proved there is still life in the boy-meets-girl trend. His whimsical color combinations and prints made his take a distinctive one, even if a few of the collage-effect looks (traffic cone orange and feathers should probably not mix) did miss the mark.
