How cold is it? Not too cold for new Toms sandals.

Most of the country is sheathed in freezing cold so one would think the only appropriate footwear choice might be a pair of cozy Uggs atop several layers of socks.

But on this very frigid Tuesday -- a day when temperatures dropped to 4 degrees Fahrenheit in New York City -- Toms announced in a kind of publicity non sequitur that, for the first time, it is offering a sandal as part of its footwear line.

And I for one am glad.

Not to rub it in to my friends in places like Minneapolis, Boston, New York and Chicago, but I’m actually sitting at my desk in L.A. wearing sandals.

So news of a sandal choice is welcome from Toms -- the “one for one” company that provides shoes or vision services to the needy for every pair of shoes or eyewear sold.

The Correa sandal is available on toms.com for $59. It comes in several designs, including some in solid colors, some in patterns and some with leather detail. All feature cross straps over the toe and an ankle strap.

If you’re not lucky enough to live in a place that’s warm enough to wear them right away, well, spring is right around the corner.

(We can hope.)
