New York Fashion Week fall 2013: Bibhu Mohapatra

Share

NEW YORK -- Indian American designer Bibhu Mohapatra, who launched his collection in 2008 after stints at Halston and J. Mendel, is yet another emerging talent trying to build on the momentum of dressing First Lady Michelle Obama. And deservedly so, judging from his fall 2013 collection shown Wednesday morning at New York Fashion Week.

The inspiration: Man Ray’s photographs of muses Kiki du Montparnasse and Lee Miller.

The look: Arty sophisticate. A black and white mosaic jacquard beaver fur coat. A black leather jacket belted over a black-and-white mosaic print pencil skirt. Gold crepe drop shoulder gown. Navy gown with laser cut black leather bodice and puff sleeves. Striking graphite foiled velvet finale gown. Dadaist-inspired architectural wedge heels.

The verdict: With a keen color sense, an eye for unusual details and a distinctively modern approach to dressing up, Mohapatra proved he is a designer to watch.
