New L.A. brewery the Dudes starts canning its beers -- including one made with pecans

New brewery the Dudes’ Brewing Co. has just introduced cans of its beer to Los Angeles. The brewery opened in March, and its first batches of beer were tested at bars from its South Bay home to downtown Los Angeles, and now the Torrance-based production brewery’s two flagship beers are rolling off its canning line and into bottle shops and bars.

Like Golden Road -- the only other Los Angeles brewery to package in cans -- the Dudes’ Double Trunk IPA and Grandma’s Pecan brown ale will be sold in four-packs of 16-ounce cans that retail for around $10 to $12.

Double Trunk is a potent brew -- more than 10% alcohol -- so you might want to split that pint can with a buddy. The brewers use corn sugar to keep the beer dry with a lighter body than you would expect in such a big beer, and the hops really shine through.

Grandma’s Pecan is a rich brown ale that uses Georgia pecans in the brewing process. The distinct nutty flavor matches the toasted and caramel notes of the brown ale well, and this is another potent brew that approaches 7% alcohol.

In addition to the canned offerings, other brews from the Dudes are available on draft around L.A. The Juice Box series is seasonal releases brewed with fresh fruits -- the first release showcased blood orange juice and zest, and a Raspberry Wheat beer is now available. Grinning Face Porter is an easy-drinking and roasty dark beer that adds toasted coconut, and it’s been a hit among the beer fans we’ve spoken to.

The Dudes’ Brewing Co. does not operate a tasting room or offer tours of the brewery, but you can find many bars and restaurants serving its beer by using the website’s beer finder.
