Grown by Pudwill Farms in Nipomo, these Prime-Jim blackberries are relatively new. Called primocane, they flower and fruit on new canes, bearing fruit in their first year, rather than their second year, as blackberry plants normally do. As a result, they allow farmers to raise two crops a year, manipulate harvest schedules, and grow the berries in seasons (such as midwinter, in areas with mild climates) and climates previously thought inhospitable.
