Two Guys Lose Weight: What to eat at the Laker game? Sushi, of course.

NOTE: This is a blog about two guys attempting to lose weight over a six-week period. They kicked off their weight loss “strategies” on Jan. 10.

My buddy Chris has been a Lakers season ticket holder for about 10 years. Which means for roughly a decade we would meet outside Staples Center, get through the metal detector, grab some beers and dogs and nachos, and watch some high quality hoop.

Because they are Chris’ tickets, I usually pay for the food and beverages. And because Chris is a gentleman he usually eats whatever I eat.

Tuesday night I told him I was thinking about passing on the hot dogs and nachos and considering sushi instead. He was game.

Staples Center typically caters to a clientele that’s been around the block, so to speak, so the sushi line was 4-5 deep. When we were able to get to the front one of the chefs suggested we split their largest dish of rolls and sushi.

“There are extra pieces when compared to buying several smaller boxes,” he advised.

The $40 price was steep, but not that much more expensive than if we bought two large hot dogs, nachos, and a pretzel.

Next was choosing a tolerable light beer. The Michelob Ultra didn’t seem terrible. And at $11 for a 16-ounce cup it was seriously overpriced. But at about 120 calories my waistline wasn’t taxed. I did miss the full taste of my usual Samuel Adams.

Houston kept it close against the Lake Show. In fact the game went into overtime before the Lakers ended up winning. Even though I would have preferred a few more pieces of sushi instead of so many rolls, the platter filled both Chris and I up for the extra-long game.

For breakfast I ate a small serving of baked squash from our cafeteria along with a blueberry Naked Juice. For lunch I had a five-dollar footlong from Subway (chicken breast on wheat, avocados, lettuce, red wine vinegar).

One thing about Staples Center that I never thought I would appreciate. They don’t have roaming vendors hawking snacks. Usually I found that inconvenient and annoying. But now as someone trying to resist a super gigantic chocolate bar, I was grateful I didn’t need to fight that temptation.
