Fine for New York, but where’s the free condom app for the rest of us?

A free condom-finder, how convenient. If you live in New York, that is. The city has launched a free app for smart phones that allows people to quickly locate places throughout the city that are handing out free condoms.

The NYC Condom Finder app, good for iPhones and Androids, lists directions to free condom distribution sites as well as information on how to use them. And these aren’t just any condoms; they’re official NYC Condoms that are almost souvenir-like in their packaging.

But the app isn’t just about freebies. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene offers this bit of advice with it: “If you choose to have sex, using a condom correctly and consistently is still the best method of reducing the transmission of HIV and other STIs, including Chlamydia, genital herpes, syphilis and hepatitis B and C.”

The agency should know. It has been handing out about 3 million free condoms a month for the last four years.

Obviously, there’s a demand. And speaking of demand, the rest of the country appears to be lacking a free-condom app.
