Paula Deen announces she’ll donate to the American Diabetes Assn.

Are you ready for one more update on Paula Deen? The doyenne of Southern cooking announced this week she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and is being compensated for being a spokeswoman for Novo Nordisk, whose diabetes medication she takes.

Deen appeared on ABC’s “The Chew” on Wednesday to say that, in addition to shilling for the pharmaceutical company, she’s also donating some of the money to the American Diabetes Assn. Whether this is in response to the negative press Deen has been getting for her association with Big Pharma isn’t known, nor is the amount she’s giving away.

“Naturally I’m being compensated, and my children are,” she said, “because we, like everybody else, have to work. But I am in a position, and my children are in a position, that we are going to set aside a certain percentage and we’re donating that back to the ADA.” Much applause from the studio audience ensued.

Earlier in the show she said she had the ADA’s support. She also said she didn’t blame herself for contracting the disease.

“Because it’s like a puzzle,” Deen said. “It’s many pieces. The thing that can bring on diabetes is stress, and I’ve had my share of stress. It can be your age, it can be your race, it can be your lifestyle, it can be from lack of exercise, and it can certainly be genetic.”

One of Deen’s most vocal detractors has been fellow TV host Anthony Bourdain, who tweeted on Tuesday, “Thinking of getting into the leg-breaking business, so I can profitably sell crutches later.”

Deen’s 2011 book “Paula Deen’s Southern Cooking Bible: The New Classic Guide to Delicious Dishes With More Than 300 Recipes” is currently ranked fourth among Amazon’s U.S. regional cookbooks.
