Pick of the Week:

Adele

It may be named after her grandmother, but there’s nothing old or fussy about Amy John’s Laguna Beach boutique. Clothes by Society for Rational Dress, A.P.C., Cacharel and Réyes hang near a vintage lawyer’s cabinet and a rifle case spilling over with jewelry by Zoe Chicco, Iosselliani and Gorjana, and perfume by Escentric Molecules. A former freelance stylist in New York, John fell in love with fashion at age 11 when she used to tag along with her grandma as she shopped on Madison Avenue. “She used to say ‘The quality isn’t there, we’re going to keep looking,’” John recalls.

Today her boutique is a whimsical homage to all those memories — from the store sign, which pictures a tree from her grandmother’s house that changes to reflect each season, to antique-looking bottles of CB I Hate Perfume, which has scents inspired by childhood memories. “There’s a great one called Winter 1972,” John says. “It smells like fresh snow.”

Theory:

The Meatpacking District comes to Melrose Place at this minimalist boutique with enough architectural keynotes (sliding steel racks, cast-aluminum cash wrap and textured brick walls) to make a New Yorker feel at home. Modeled after the Theory flagship in the Big Apple, the men’s and women’s shop also does the lifestyle thing with photography books from Dashwood, scented candles by Linari, men’s skincare products from Jack Black and retro shades from Oliver Goldsmith and Salt. Best bets include a cotton matte-jersey bubble dress ($355), burgundy patent leather Mary Janes ($325), and men’s textured wovens ($225).
